Costa Rican clubs sweep road matches

[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Week 1] The Concacaf Champions League is set up so the four U.S. teams and four Mexican teams are separated and have a clear path to the quarterfinals, but away wins by Costa Rican clubs Cartagines and Herediano will put the pressure on their idle rivals, the LA Galaxy and Cruz Azul, to match them.

Pablo Herrera's hat trick led Cartagines to a 4-2 win El Salvador's Isidro Metapan in the Group 8 opener. The Galaxy opens CCL play at home against Cartagines on Aug. 20.

Herediano, which finished ahead of Real Salt Lake in last year's group play, cruised past Valencia of Haiti, 6-1, in the Group 3 opener.

Pablo Herrera put on a real show last night for Cartago, racking up a hat trick, an assist and 7 shots on goal; all this coming out of the midfield. It’s nice to see that he’s back at his scintillating best after several years of struggling with injuries that almost ended his career. I’ll never forget the way he tore up the left side of the US defense as a promising young 21 year old back in the hex in 2009. I’m interested in seeing how he does against the Galaxy next Tuesday.
