Metalist Kharkiv Kicked Out of UCL

  • Reuters, Wednesday, August 14, 2013 1:18 PM
UEFA on Wednesday booted Ukrainian giant Metalist Kharkiv out of the Champions League. Metalist had been scheduled to play Schalke 04 in the Champions League playoffs, which begin next week. The European governing body’s decision comes 10 days after Metalist lost an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport over a domestic match-fixing case from 2008.

The club, runner-up last season to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine, has already knocked out Greek team PAOK and was due to play Schalke in a two-game series on Aug 21 and 27 with the winner qualifying for this season’s Champions League. UEFA’s emergency panel is set to meet on Wednesday to “consider the consequences of the decision on the competition." As Reuters points out, Metalist could still appeal to the CAS over UEFA’s decision and ruling in the club’s favor could throw the competition into confusion.

Turkish giant Fenerbahce is in a similar position. Though it faces Arsenal in a two-game playoff for UCL qualification, Fener might not know the final ruling about its match-fixing case until the group stage has already started.
