New Cosmos crash to first defeat

[NASL REWIND: Week 3] Brian Shriver scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season to take over the lead in the NASL Golden Boot race and fire the Carolina RailHawks to the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over the New York Cosmos, their, who suffered their first loss since joining the league for the fall campaign.

"New York probably had the more shots and more possession, but we took our chances," said RailHawks coach Colin Clarke.  "For me, that was our biggest weakness in the spring and something we have worked on a great deal.  New York is a very good team, with good players."

-- The Fort Lauderdale Strikers earned their first win under new coach Gunter Kronsteiner with a 2-1 win at San Antonio Scorpions, who have now dropped three in a row to start the fall season after finishing the spring campaign with five wins in a row.

A Martin Nunez header and Mark Anderson free kick earned the Strikers a two-goal lead before Pole Tomasz Zahorski cut the lead in half on the stoke of halftime.

"I feel very good today because I thought the team deserved the three points," said Kronsteiner. "I think we need every day to work in practice and change things and we are slowly being able to do that. I was happy with the first half today."

-- The Tampa Bay Rowdies remained unbeaten at 1-0-2 when Andreas Arango struck in stoppage time, getting his head to a cross from Frankie Sanfilippo to give them a 1-1 draw at Minnesota United FC.

"I have to give credit to my players for fighting hard until the last minute," said Rowdies coach Ricky Hill, "and I can't grumble about taking a point."
