Gustavo Stars in Schalke Romp

While Bayern Munich squeaked by Eintracht Frankfurt, 1-0, Wolfsburg sent a message to the rest of the Bundesliga with a 4-0 drubbing of Schalke at home, as new signing Luiz Gustavo played a starring role. The Brazilian slotted directly into the starting lineup, completing 98 percent of his passes in his 75 minutes on the field.

"The likelihood of us proving successful with Luiz Gustavo is very high," Wolfsburg coach Klaus Allofs had said at Gustavo’s unveiling. "Now we are just happy to have him here and we hope to enjoy many years of successful cooperation.” With his first performance over the weekend, “Luiz showed that he fits us perfectly," Allofs said. "He exudes a pure will to win and he's brought calmness. You get the feeling that everyone enjoyed the extra quality and security."

Gustavo, who had fallen down the pecking order in Bayern’s center midfield, decided last week to join Wolfsburg instead of EPL giant Arsenal. The Brazilian joined Tim Klose, formerly of Nuremberg, and Daniel Caligiuri, formerly of Frieburg, as the club’s new signings. Wolfsburg, which finished 11th in the German Bundesliga last season, is targeting a top six finish this year.
