[COLLEGE WOMEN: Friday night] Crystal Dunn, the 2012 Soccer America Women’s Player of the Year, scored both goals to leadNo. 1 North Carolina to a 2-0 win over No. 9 Santa Clara to open the 2013 women’s college season.
Dunn, who carried the Tar Heels to the 2012 national title with a strong NCAATournament run, started up where she left off last season when finished inside the near left post from 12 yards on a pass from Kealia Ohai to pull the Tar Heelsahead in the 59th minute.
The senior added the insurance goal with a little more than four minutes to play when she took a pass from Summer Greenand scored from 15 yards out.
Bryane Heaberlin, who played with Dunn and Ohai on the 2012 U.S. Under-20 Women’s World Cup team, made threesaves in the second half for the Tar Heels, the most crucial on a header by Mexican international Sofia Huerta with the score still 0-0 in the second half.
