[COLLEGE WOMEN: Friday night] Crystal Dunn, the 2012 Soccer America Women’s Player of the Year, scored both goals to leadNo. 1 North Carolina to a 2-0 win over No. 9 Santa Clara to open the 2013 women’s college season.
 
Dunn, who carried the Tar Heels to the 2012 national title with a strong NCAATournament run, started up where she left off last season when finished inside the near left post from 12 yards on a pass from Kealia Ohai to pull the Tar Heelsahead in the 59th minute.

The senior added the insurance goal with a little more than four minutes to play when she took a pass from Summer Greenand scored from 15 yards out.
 
Bryane Heaberlin, who played with Dunn and Ohai on the 2012 U.S. Under-20 Women’s World Cup team, made threesaves in the second half for the Tar Heels, the most crucial on a header by Mexican international Sofia Huerta with the score still 0-0 in the second half.

NATIONAL TEAM UPDATE. Besides Dunn, Virginia’s Morgan Brian has been called up for the U.S. women’s match againstMexico on Sept. 3 in Washington, D.C. Brian had two assists to lead No. 7 Virginia to a 4-2 win over VCU in the second game of the Kloeckner Classic in Charlottesville.

A crowd of 5,242 in College Station watched No. 7 Duke beat No. 16 Texas A&M, 1-0, on a goal Kim DeCesare in the 52nd minute.

Duke freshman Toni Payne set up thegoal, splitting two Aggie defenders and sending a perfect pass to DeCesare, who took one touch as she drove to the right side of the box for her 24th career goal.

No. 20 Portland drew4,571 fans — including a record 1,700 students — at Merlo Field for its 1-0 win over No. 13 Marquette. Ellen Parker had the lone goal in the 22nd minute.

SENIORS RESCUE NITTANY LIONS. No. 2 Penn State rallied from 2-0 with goals by seniors Taylor Schram and Maya Hayes 72 seconds apart in the final 10 minutes of regulation to earn a 2-2 tie with No. 19 West Virginia at Jeffrey Field.
 
Frances Silva had put West Virginia ahead in the fourth minute, and Kelsie Maloney, who had set up Silva’s goal, extended the Mountaineers’ lead with 20 minutes toplay.

Alex Doll cleaned up a rebound in the 18th minute of overtime to give No.4 Stanford a 2-1 victory at Boston College.

Kaitlin Brenn scored from about 15 yards in the first overtime period as No. 14 Georgetown took a2-1 comeback win over William & Mary for its 12th straight win at home dating back to the 2011 season.

Francesca Garzelloni scored withthree minutes left in overtime give No. 24 Denver a 2-1 win over Colorado College in the first round of the Colorado Cup.

Elizabeth Eddy scored two goals to lead USC to a 4-1 win at No. 11 San Diego State. The senior put the Women of Troyahead in the seventh minute when her cross was misplayed near the goal line and trickled in. USC pulled away with goals two minutes apart from Kayla Mills andJamie Fink in the 56th and 58th minutes.

STADIUM OPENING. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opened its new soccerstadium on Friday. A crowd of 1,187 fans watched the Islander women fall, 2-1, to Houston.
