Sounders celebrate Dempsey debut with nervy win

[MLS REWIND: Week 26] The Seattle Sounders got the win they desperately needed in Clint Dempsey's home debut before 67,385 fans, the second-largest MLS crowd for a stand-alone game, but it wasn't easy. In a physical match played at a frenetic pace, the Sounders hung on for a 1-0 win over their archrival Portland Timbers that moved them into the top five in the Western Conference ahead of FC Dallas on wins.

WEEK 26 IN BRIEF:
Goals: 39/11 GP (3.57 avg.)
Video: Weekend Timeline
Att.: 20,107 avg. (4 sellouts)

-- Chivas USA stunned the New York Red Bulls with a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon thanks to two goals from Erick Torres and third from Julio Morales, its young strikers on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara.

-- The New England Revolution pounded the Philadelphia Union, 5-1, to move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference ahead of the Houston Dynamo on goals scored.

SIGI REFLECTS. For those who have worked in soccer for 30-plus years like Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, the sight of a sold-out CenturyLink Field for Dempsey's debut was a special moment. Here's what he said afterwards:

"Today I drove in around 2:15, 2:30 and I already saw all green walking around [...] It was fantastic. When you're out there as the team marched out for the national anthem, you just look and saw everything full. I still pinch myself every time I see that.

"I think we're moving forward. I think we're getting there [...] You never really thought this was going to happen. You see our league moving forward, you see the continued support. I was watching TV, the Montreal game, and the fans there were fantastic in that game. But nobody compares to our fans, turnout in numbers like that is indescribable to me."
