Jones red-carded, Altidore gets first Sunderland goal

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Jermaine Jones will join Anderlecht's Sacha Kljestan as the only Americans playing in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, but the 31-year-old German-American will miss Schalke 04's opener after being red-carded in its 3-2 win at PAOK in the second leg of their playoff series on Tuesday. Jozy Altidore scored his first goal for Sunderland and set up the winning goal as the Black Cats rallied late for a 4-2 win over third-level Milton Keynes Dons in the English League Cup.

Jones received his second red card in Champions League play and seventh of this career for his second yellow card on a challenge in the 62nd minute of Schalke's match in Greece. The game was tied 1-1 at the time -- 2-2 on aggregate -- but short-handed Schalke went ahead three minutes after Jones' dismissal when young German star Julian Draxler scored to make it 2-1 on the night and give the Gelsenkirchen club the away-goals cushion.

Altidore scored his first goal in three games for Sunderland in the 78th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 and assisted on Connor Wickham's winning goal, the second of three Sunderland goals beginning in the 87th minute.
