First starts: Adu at Bahia; Shea at Stoke

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Brek Shea made his first start for Stoke City since joining the English club January, playing the first half of its 3-1 win over Walsall in the English League Cup. The start came four weeks after he was injured in a friendly against MLS's Philadelphia Union. Freddy Adu got his first start for Bahia since joining the Brazilian club in April.

Trinidadian Kenwyne Jones scored all three goals for Stoke, which started only three starters from the team that beat Crystal Palace, 2-1, for its first win of the EPL season.

Neither of Shea's American teammates -- Geoff Cameron or Maurice Edu -- dressed for Stoke, which moves into the third round against Tranmere.

Adu played the first 70 minutes of a scoreless tie with Portuguesa that sent Bahia to the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, where it faces Colombia's Atletico Nacional.
