[COLLEGE MEN: Thursday]
After knocking off two of the top three teams in the Soccer America Preseason Top 25, California went from unranked to No. 4 in the Top 25
and the hard part of living up to the rankings began. That started Thursday night as the Golden Bears headed across the new Bay Bridge to face San Francisco, which it beat, 1-0, with a goal by Christian Thierjung
with 19 seconds left in regulation.
“Tonight’s game looked like it was heading to overtime, but we had great combination
play at the top of the box, and Christian scored a fantastic goal to give us the win,” Cal head coach Kevin Grimes
said. “For a young player,
Christian has great composure. He’s extremely intelligent in decision making. He has a lot of good qualities and plays like someone beyond his years. For him to finish like he did at the end of
the game – in the most demanding moment – that really showed his quality.”
-- After knocking Preseason No. 2 Indiana, UCLA climbed to No. 6 in the rankings, but the
Bruins fell in their home opener to Cal Poly, 3-0. Chase Minter
and Mackenzie Pridham
put the Mustangs up
2-0 after 25 minutes and Chris Bernardi
scored on a breakaway in the 84th minute.
UCLA's nightmare evening was complete when freshman Michael Amick
was handed a red card midway through the second half.
