Aces beat SLU for first time since 1996

[EVANSVILLE: Men] Sophomore Mark Anthony Gonzalez scored with 34 seconds to play in overtime to give Evansville a 2-1 win over No. 6 Saint Louis for its first victory over the Billikens since 1996.

Gonzalez scored on a pass from sophomore Nate Opperman to end the Aces' fourth overtime game in five games this season.

“As [Nate] was lifting up his head getting ready for that cross," Gonzalez told the Evansville Courier-Press, "I knew he was going to swing it into me, so I got a few steps past the defender and the ball was there. All I had to do was touch it past the keeper. Words can’t explain it. It was fantastic.”

Raymond Lee gave SLU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, but freshman forward Jared Robinson equalized with a shot he lobbed over Billikens keeper Nick Shackelford. Robinson collided with Shackelford on the play and had to be taken out of the game.

The loss was the first of the season for SLU. Evansville is 2-2-1.
