scored a hat trick, Lionel Messi
matched him with three goals as Barcelona disposed of Ajax, 4-0, to
open play in the UEFA Champions League.
Messi's hat trick was the 27th of his career and his record fourth in the Champions League and gave him 62 goals in the competition, nine short of
the record held by former Real Madrid star Raul
. Messi's Hat Trick: MOURINHO LAMENTS.
Chelsea suffered a shock loss of Week 1 of the Champions League when it fell at home to
Swiss club FC Basel, 2-1.
The Blues' troubles up front continued as new signings Samuel Eto'o
and Demba Ba
failed to score, leaving the trio of Eto'o, Ba and Fernando Torres
, who did not dress, with one goal in six games. Manager Jose Mourinho would not take issue
with his forwards, however.
"When we lose," he said, "I don't speak about the players or individuals. I speak about my responsibility."
He did say the Blues lacked the
character to withstand the shock of goals from young Egyptian star Mohamed Salah
and Marco Streller
that put Basel
"The team is not a team with the personality to face the difficult moments of the game," Mourinho said. "The team started with accepting the
responsibility of playing -- they pressed the opponent, played with the ball and tried to create, but when first negative moment arrives with the equalizer, the team shakes a little bit. The only
thing you can do is to work." Salah Equalizer:
Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp
usually comes across as calm and collected, a little crazed but always
smiling, but fans saw another side of him on Wednesday as exploded in rage at the fourth official during Dortmund's game at Napoli and got dismissed.
To make matters worse, Dortmund, last
year's runner-up, lost, 2-1. At least, Klopp quickly took responsibility for his outburst.
"So much went wrong today," he said afterwards. "My actions before I was sent off were silly and
I have to take the full blame for it. I've already apologized to my team and to the referee and acknowledge the fact it was my own fault."
Klopp was incensed that former U.S. U-17
defender Neven Subotic
was not allowed back on the field fast enough after being treated for an injury and Gonzalo
put Napoli ahead during his absence.

suspension for picking up a red card in the second leg of Schalke 04's playoff against PAOK and did not play in the German club's opener, a 3-0 win over Steaua Bucharest. WEDNESDAY, Results:
