Pele pulls for Cosmos win at Lockhart

[NASL PREVIEW: Week 8] Just like the old days of the NASL, a Strikers-Cosmos game pits two of the league's best teams. Heading into Saturday's showdown at Lockhart Stadium, the Cosmos find themselves in first place for the first time since joining the league, while the resurgent Strikers are riding a five-game unbeaten streak and sit just a point behind them, tied with two other teams.

"There is a lot of excitement about our game against the Cosmos, not only because of the historical significance of the match, but the implications in the table," said Strikers coach Guenter Kronsteiner. "The Cosmos are a really strong team, the leaders right now.  We need to continue to be strong on defense and try to find a way to get some goals and come out with a win."

The Strikers thought they had earned a point in the fall season opener, but a stoppage-time goal gave the Cosmos a 2-1 win before a sellout crowd at home.

"It was a very important rivalry, the Cosmos and Strikers," said former Cosmos star Pele, who is now the club's honorary president. "When I came here, we used to talk a lot about the Strikers and we used to talk about the players.  I hope everything goes OK, that the Cosmos have luck and win the game."
