Diaz leads first-place Cosmos to first road win

[NASL REWIND: Week 8] Venezuelan striker Diomar Diaz struck twice in the first half to lead the first-place New York Cosmos to a 2-1 win over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in front of 7,653 fans at Lockhart Stadium for their first win on the road in the NASL.

"First of all, it is a very good result for us as it is an important win against a team that created a lot of difficulties for us today," said Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese. "I have to give the Strikers a lot of credit as they played very well especially in the second half as they created a lot of opportunities but I'm glad that our defense was very strong today. Overall, it was a very good match and it was a strong challenge for us today."

The victory sets up a clash between the Cosmos and second-placed Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sept. 29. Two goals from forward Georgi Hristov and one from midfielder Shane Hill lifted the Rowdies to a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks. They remain unbeaten in eight games in the fall season and 10 games overall.

A stoppage-time penalty kick from Hans Denissen secured the first San Antonio Scorpions win of the fall campaign, a 2-1 win over the Carolina RailHawks.
