Host Tahiti qualified for the quarterfinals of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup -- its first passage to the knockout stage of any FIFA
world championship -- with a 5-3 win over the USA on two goals from Angelo Tchen
in the last minute of overtime.
The USA came back from 2-0 and 3-1
down to tie the score on goals by Mario Chimienti
and Nick Pereira
. The first U.S. goal was an own goal by Tchen.
The match featured 80 shots in the 39 minutes of play -- with a 45-34 advantage to the host Tiki Toa.
Spain beat the United Arab Emirates, 5-2 in the other Group A match. Spain and
Tahiti are through to the quarterfinals, while the USA and UAE are eliminated.
Group play ends Monday.
