[COLLEGE MEN: Tuesday] Sophomore Jackson Eskay’s fourth goal of the seasonlifted William & Mary to a 1-0 victory at No. 3 North Carolina on Tuesday night.  The victory was the third straight for the Tribe over ranked opponents after wins over No. 4 Creighton andNo. 25 Elon.

The Tar Heels, who suffered their first loss of the season had their chances. Chipper Root hit the crossbar in the first half, andMarco Sunol and Alex Olofson had chances after Eskay put the Tribe ahead in the 73rd minute, but they were denied byfreshman goalkeeper Mac Phillips.

It is the first time in school history that the Tribe defeated three consecutive ranked opponents.

WAKE FOREST-VCU. Down a man after forward Sean Okoli was issued a red card and trailing 1-0 in the first half, Wake Forestrallied to beat No. 10 VCU, 2-1, on goals from defenders Tolani Ibikunle and Sam Fink, the first of the season for eachplayer.

VCU went on top in the 19th minute on Dakota Barnathan‘s header and just over four minutes later, Okoli was sent off for throwing a ball ata Ram player.

But the Demon Deacons dominated the rest of the game and finished with a 20-8 edge in shots.

“I’m very proud,” said Wake coach Jay Vidovich. “ I’m happy for (the players), also. I think they’re starting to realize they can be a quality team. This evening, I think they foundthat they’re winners, so that’s the bottom line for me.”

CREIGHTON-MICHIGAN STATE. Michigan State held Creighton to a 2-2 tie in theBluejays’ fourth consecutive double-overtime match Tuesday night in Omaha.

Creighton had to rally twice on goals from freshman Marvin Iskra and Bruno Castro to salvage the draw after the Spartans (4-1-1) went ahead on goals by Fatai Alashe and Tim Kreutz.

AKRON-OHIO STATE. ZacPortillos‘ goal in the seventh minute stood up as No. 9 Akron beat Ohio State, 1-0, in front of 3,328 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.

  Robbie Derschang made a key defensive stop on Zach Mason‘s shot late in the game topreserve the win for the Zips, who improved to 6-2-0 on the year.

MARYLAND-OLD DOMINION. Sophomore DavidKabelik’s second-half equalizer salvaged a 1-1 draw for No. 14 Maryland against visiting Old Dominion. The goal came nine minutes after freshman AlexCrognale’s own goal put the Monarchs ahead.
 
“I’m disappointed with the result,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We squandered way too many chancesin this game and looked like a tired team. We were not as sharp as we’ve been the last couple of games.”

CLEMSON-USC UPSTATE. Kyle Fisher‘s header off Thomas McNamara‘s corner kick and Ara Amirkhanian‘s divingheader off Jack Metcalf‘s cross gave No. 15 Clemson a 2-0 win over winless USC Upstate.

Milestone …

George Gelnovatch earned 250th career victory at Virginia as the Cavaliers beat previously unbeaten Providence, 4-0, at Kloeckner Stadium. Eric Bird scored a pair of first-half goals, and freshmen Patrick Foss and RiggsLennon each added second-half goals.

MONDAY NIGHT. New Mexico freshman Niko Hansen scored a goal with12 seconds remaining in regulation to give the No. 19 Lobos a 1-0 win at UC Santa Barbara before 3,147 fans.
