Manchester United on Wednesday ousted Liverpool from the League Cup thanks to Mexico international Javier Hernandez, who volleyed home a Wayne Rooney corner just
36 seconds into the second half to secure a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. While the win certainly took some early-season pressure off United coach David Moyes, most of the attention had
been focused on the return of Luis Suarez, who was playing his first competitive match for Liverpool since receiving a 10-game band for biting the arm of Branislav
Ivanovic in a Premier League game in April.
"I thought [Suarez] was excellent, considering he'd been out for such a long time,'' Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers
said after the match. "He ran himself into the ground. As he goes on, he will get sharper."
Moyes, meanwhile, was proud of his team’s response to Sunday’s 4-1 thrashing by
Manchester City at the Etihad. "I think what was important (was) that the whole club showed we were hurt by the game on Sunday, and the players have gone out and done a great job,'' Moyes said. "I've
said I will fix it and turn it around, and I will do."
In Wednesday’s other League Cup games, Swansea, last season’s winner of the competition, fell 3-1 away to Championship
club Birmingham City, while Arsenal beat West Bromwich Albion on penalties after the game finished 1-1 after overtime. Newcastle and Stoke also advanced to the next round.
