Akron extends NCAA record conference unbeaten streak

[COLLEGE MEN: Sunday] An early goal by Reinaldo Brenes' goal -- his fourth goal and fourth game-winner of the season -- gave No. 9 Akron its third consecutive 1-0 victory in an Mid-American match at West Virginia Sunday night. The win extended the Zips' NCAA record conference unbeaten streak to 49 matches (46-0-3), which began during the 2007 season.

"It was a good 1-0 win for our team," said Zips head coach Jared Embick. "West Virginia is a much better team than their record shows. To go on the road and get the win is a great result."

Upset ...

Cornell (6-1-2) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten when it suffered a 1-0 loss to Niagara. The Purple Eagles had won just one of their first eight games but won on Ken Cooper's in the 48th minute.

The Big Red, who went into the game with a 25-game non-conference regular-season unbeaten streak that dated back to September 2011, was playing its third game in six days but struggled to capitalize on prime scoring opportunities late in the game.

Cornell's best chance came in the 71st minute when defender Jake Rinow one-timed a Conor Goepel cross from the right side straight into the crossbar.

STREAKING UAB. No. 17 UAB picked up its first Conference USA win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Kentucky on goals by Freddy Ruiz and Ian Svantesson to extend its winning streak to three games, matching its longest winning streak of the year.

“We played very well in the first half and deserved our 2-0 lead,” UAB coach Mike Getman said. “In the second half, they threw everything at us and we hanging on a bit.”
