Vecsey named Hall of Fame media recipient

[AWARDS] New York Times columnist George Vecsey was named the recipient of the National Soccer Hall of Fame's Colin Jose Media Award. He will be honored at the 2013 Induction Ceremony on Oct. 11 before the USA-Jamaica World Cup qualifier against Jamaica in Kansas City.

The ceremony, presented by Eurosport, begins at 2:30 p.m. CT on the West Plaza of Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., and will be open to the public.

Vecsey's writing career has spanned 52 years, beginning when he was hired by Newsday while attending Hofstra College. In 1968, he joined the New York Times, where he worked primarily as a sportswriter. He still serves as a contributing sports columnist since retiring at the end of 2011.

Vecsey was one of the first columnists at a major newspaper to cover soccer, and he went to eight consecutive World Cups from Spain in 1982 to South Africa in 2010.

He is also the author of six of best sellers, including "Loretta Lynn, Coal Miner's Daughter," which was made into a film in 1980 starring Cissy Spacek and, in 1985, "Martina," the autobiography of Martina Navratilova. Vecsey is in the final stages of finishing a book about the eight previous World Cups he has covered. The book is scheduled to be released in May of 2014.

Vecsey was more than a sportswriter, however. He also served as a national correspondent in Appalachia, a Metro reporter in New York and the paper's religion writer, all in the 1970s.

The Colin Jose Media Award was created to honor the contributions of members of the print and electronic media who specialize in American soccer. The Award is named for Colin Jose, Historian Emeritus of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the preeminent soccer historian of North America.

GREAT for George he is a fine writer. Can anyone tell me why we still don't have a Soccer Hall of Fame? What has Dan Flynn and his huge annual salary to enhance US Soccer (please don't say the national team until you see the budget they operate under)Dan how much are "we" paying SUM (soccer united marketing) to rep the national team. At the same time SUM promotes MLS. What about other American Soccer. Its getting tougher and tougher to see any difference in the USSF & MLS
