Training move pays off for Sweetin

[SAINT LOUIS-CREIGHTON: Men] Alex Sweetin's goal in the 51st minute gave No. 25 Saint Louis to a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Creighton in front of 3,070 fans Wednesday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

After a turnover off a Creighton goal kick, Sweetin found open space roughly 23 yards out and rifled a shot past keeper Connor Sparrow for his third goal in as many games.

“I took my touch right in the middle and could have passed it, but I decided to shoot and it worked out,” Sweetin said. “I work on that all the time in training, and it’s great to actually see it happen in a game.”

The Billikens played the last 40 minutes with 10 men after Filip Pavisic was issued a red card.

“This was a great win for us,” SLU head coach Mike McGinty said.

SLU improved to 6-2-0 on the season, Creighton fell to 5-2-2. The regulation loss snapped the Jays’ program record of five consecutive double-overtime contests.
