Uhl winner gives the Cardinal its third golden goal of season

[STANFORD-ARIZONA: Women] Taylor Uhl scored with eight seconds left in the first overtime to give No. 2 Stanford a 2-1 victory over Arizona in the Cardinal’s Pac-12 home opener Friday. The win extended its home unbeaten streak to 73 and its conference winning streak to 44.

The goal was the 10th of the season for Uhl, a junior transfer from Minnesota. Left outside back Laura Liedle played a long ball from midfield that found Uhl at the top of the penalty area. Uhl touched the ball to her right and fired a hard left-footed shot inside the right post in the 100th minute.

“Taylor has an incredible ability to slow the play down,” Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. “A lot of people would rush that shot, but Taylor always shows great composure and was rewarded with the goal.”

The golden goal was Stanford third of the season, following second-overtime winners by Uhl against Boston College (a 2-1 victory) and Courtney Verloo against Santa Clara (3-2).

Stanford was outshot 9-1 in the first half but went ahead on Megan Turner's point-blank header. Arizona tied the game in the 78th minute when it intercepted a Stanford back pass, leading to a shot by Alexandra Doller that bounced off the post to Emily Lai, who scored the rebound to tie the score.
