Keeper Hobbs leads Gophers past Nittany Lions

[MINNESOTA-PENN STATE: Women] Minnesota beat No. 8 Penn State, 1-0, to hand the Nittany Lions their first Big Ten loss of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Lions outshot the Gophers, 20-6, but could not beat Minnesota keeper Tara Hobbs, who collected seven saves.

Haley Helverson scored the lone goal from point-blank range on a cross from Steph Brandt in the 17th minute for the game's only goal.
 
Taylor Stainbrook came close to extending the Gophers’ lead late in the first half, hitting the crossbar and keeping the score at 1-0.

Maya Hayes had a phenomenal opportunity in the 70th minute, flicking the ball towards the net from eight yards out on a cross from Mallory Weber, but Hobbs made a diving save to preserve Minnesota’s lead.
 
Kori Chapic and Tani Costa each had chances in the final minutes but were unable to capitalize as Hobbs made saves on both attempts.
 
Penn State moves to 10-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in Big Ten play, while the Gophers improve to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference action.
