Prandelli Mulls Italy Recall for Totti

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli on Monday confirmed that if AS Roma striker Francesco Totti continues to play as well as he has for the current Serie A leader, he would have to recall the 37-year-old to the national team. Totti, who hasn’t played for Italy since the 2006 World Cup final, scored twice as Roma blanked Inter Milan 3-0 at the San Siro on Saturday.

“Players with great talent like Francesco, like Parma’s Antonio Cassano, are always under observation,” Prandelli said on Monday. “We’ll evaluate Totti a month before the World Cup. But a Totti like this is a player to talk about, to reflect upon, it is a fantastic Totti. If the World Cup was today then I would absolutely call him up, there is no doubt about that.” Having said this, Prandelli admitted that he had not spoken to the Roma captain. “I haven’t spoken to him about it, there is no need eight months before the event,” Prandelli continued. Italy has already qualified for next summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

One player who has been brought back to the national team fold after missing most of the last two seasons with a knee injury is New Jersey-born Giuseppe Rossi. Prandelli added the Fiorentina striker to Italy’s squad for the last round of World Cup qualifiers on Friday and next Tuesday.
