Amirkhanian keeps Tar Heels winless in ACC

[NORTH CAROLINA-CLEMSON: Men] Ara Amirkhanian’s golden goal 98 seconds into overtime gave No. 17 Clemson a 2-1 win at No. 6 North Carolina for the Tigers' biggest win of the season. The loss left the Tar Heels winless in the ACC in six games (0-1-6).

Amirkhanian ran on to a cross from Tigers freshman Austen Burnikel and his shot for his sixth goal of the year. Clemson goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell had set up the play with a long punt to Burnikel and was also credited with an assist on the winner.

Clemson had stunned Carolina, taking the lead after North Carolina defender Jonathan Campbell was whistled for a hand ball inside the box just 64 seconds into the match.

Carolina keeper Brendan Moore made the initial save on the penalty kick from Thomas McNamara, but the ball went directly back to McNamara, who put away the rebound.

North Carolina scored the equalizer in the 68th minute when Verneri Valimaa scored his first goal of the season on assists from Josh Rice and Omar Holness.

“That was a big win for us,” said Clemson coach Mike Noonan. “On the last goal, Burnikel played a great ball to Amirkhanian, who scored the game-winner for us. Kyle Fisher played great in defense, McNamara was his usual self, and Alexandre Rome’o Happi also had a good game. I was very proud of the entire team."
