Wilshere Comments Spark Twitter War with England Cricketer

South Africa-born English cricketer Kevin Pietersen engaged in a war of words via Twitter with Jack Wilshere over his comment that only homegrown players should be allowed to play for the national team. Pietersen, who was born in South Africa but has played cricket for England for nearly 10 years, took to the social networking site to ask the Arsenal midfielder what he thought of his own allegiance as well as a number of other British sports stars.

Earlier this week, Wilshere told reporters that he did not believe the current statute for switching nationalities on soccer was stringent enough. Later, he was forced to backtrack on his comments, insisting that they were not directed toward the FA’s interest in potentially recruiting Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj, currently an England resident, for the national team.

"The only people who should play for England are English people,” Wilshere had said. "If you live in England for five years it doesn't make you English. If I went to Spain and lived there for five years I am not going to play for Spain. We have to remember what we are. We are English. We tackle hard, are tough on the pitch and are hard to beat.”
