Messi Couldn't Watch After World Cup Exit

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi says he didn't watch the World Cup anymore after Argentina crashed out on penalties against hosts Germany in the quarterfinal. 'After we lost to Germany, I didn't watch any more World Cup games,' he told Argentine television. "I didn't know about anything that was going on. The final? I didn't watch it." It was a matter of some controversy in Argentina that Coach Jose Pekerman opted to keep Messi on the bench for the game against Germany. Nevertheless, Messi maintains he had no problem accepting the coach's decision. "I had no problem with Pekerman, he took me to the World Cup and gave me my debut. ... I wouldn't be unhappy if he continued." Messi added that the team didn't deserve to lose. "Argentina was eliminated when we were playing the best football." Pekerman, of course, won't be continuing as national team coach, as he promptly resigned following the loss to Germany. Several names have been floated about as possible successors, from former coaches Daniel Passarella and Alfio Basile, to legend Diego Maradona.
