[SAN DIEGO STATE-CALIFORNIA: Men]
Freshman Christian Thierjung
's goal in the 80th minute gave No. 1 California a 2-1
comeback win at San Diego State that kept the Bears, who had trailed for the first time this season, unbeaten at 8-0-2.
Junior midfielder Omid
set up the gamewinner when he won a tackle, laid the ball off to Thierjung, who scored his second game-winning goal of the season.
Thierjung also scored on the road against
San Francisco with 19 seconds left to give Cal a 1-0 win. Jordan Ongaro
put the Aztecs ahead when he scored on a header off an assist by Abraham
Villon on the hour mark.
But within 10 minutes, Cal was back even as Ryan Neil
played a ball in behind the defense, and Max Oldham
beat goalkeeper Blake Hylen
to the ball and scored into the empty net.
“Being down a goal and on the road against a
very good team is always going to be a tremendous challenge,” Cal coach Kevin Grimes
said. “The players certainly stepped up with a great
performance throughout the game. Even when we were down 1-0, we felt confident in the game we were playing and in the amount of chances we were creating. A couple of outstanding finishes by Max and
Christian ultimately pulled us ahead.”
The Bears move up the coast to play at No. 5 UCLA on Sunday.
