The Parc des Princes, home stadium of Ligue 1 giant Paris Saint-Germain, is set to undergo a major facelift after France hosts Euro 2016. Because the stadium is owned by the city of Paris, mayorBertrand Delanoe needed to give his blessing to the project, which he did this week. The upgrade will see the stadium’s capacity increased from 45,000 to 60,000.
In aninterview with Le Parisien last year, PSG owner Nasser Al Khelaifi explained his vision for the project. “The first option is to demolish and then rebuild the Parc on thesame site to make it a 60,000-capacity venue,” the Qatari said. “It’s a very ambitious project.”
However, Paris officials were against a large-scale project that they estimatewould cost between 350 and 400 million euros ($474-$542 million), so it’s likely that Delanoe has agreed to a less far-reaching solution.
The French national team will play its firstinternational in nearly four years at the Parc des Princes today against Australia.
