[PENN STATE-MICHIGAN: Women]
Despite a 21-7 edge in shots, No. 10 Penn State was unable to capitalize on its offensive opportunities on Sunday and fell to No. 21
Michigan, 1-0, for its first home loss since August 2012. The loss was also the first ever to the Wolverines in 13 games in State College.
A cross by Nkem Ezurike
led to a scoring opportunity for senior Tori Combs
, who tapped the game-winner in from point blank range in the 67th minute.
Penn State had its chances in the second half, including shots by Maya Hayes
and Raquel Rodriguez
Wolverine keeper Taylor Bucklin
and Kori Chapic
's shot that skimmed the top of the goal.
amazing," said Michigan coach Greg Ryan
. "The girls are so proud and happy, and they should be. And I'm so proud of them. We knew coming in that it would take a
consummate team effort to get a win against a very talented Penn State team, but our girls focused every second and never gave an inch. We knew Penn State was going to get chances. They missed a few
sitters, and so did we. Tori's goal was a great goal. We knew we'd have that all day long. It was just a matter of getting someone on the right end. She buried it."
The win was revenge
for Michigan after being eliminated in a shootout from last year's NCAA Tournament on the same field.
