Ecuadoran thoughts are with Chucho

[WORLD CUP 2014 QUALIFYING: South America] Chile beat Ecuador, 2-1, on the final day of World Cup qualifying in South America, but the result sent both teams to the finals as Uruguay only managed to beat archrival Argentina by one goal, 3-2. The Celeste, whose fourth-place finish was the best of any South American team at the 2010 World Cup, will have to face Jordan in an intercontinental playoff next month.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Gary Medel gave Chile the win over Ecuador and third place in South America behind Argentina, which had qualified in September, and Colombia, which clinched Friday when it came back from 3-0 down in the second half to tie Chile, 3-3, in Barranquilla.

Uruguay finished tied on points with Ecuador to take fourth place but would have needed a big win over Argentina, missing injured Lionel Messi, to overtake Ecuador.

While fans took to the streets of Santiago for a night of partying, the mood was more somber in Quito, where fans chanted "Chucho, Chucho."

A tearful Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda dedicated his team's qualification to "Chucho," popular star Christian Benitez, who passed away this summer in Qatar.
