Arabe Unido gains measure of revenge

[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Week 6] Nine days after Panama crashed out of the World Cup at the hands of the USA in Panama City, Panamanian club Arabe Unido did what the Canaleros could not do and held on to its lead -- thanks to plenty of time-wasting -- to beat MLS's Houston Dynamo, 1-0, and qualify for the Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals. The loss left the Dynamo as the only U.S. MLS representative not to reach the final eight that will be played in March.

Arabe Unido, which needed to win to advance, went ahead on Jose Gonzalez's goal in the 61st minute. Gonzalez scored on a rebound after goalie Tyler Deric made a stop on his initial shot but could not hold on to the ball.

With the Dynamo needing a result in its final MLS game of the season Sunday at D.C. United to have any chance of making the playoffs, Deric was one of nine changes in the starting lineup from the team that played last weekend.

Brad Davis, who assisted on the tying goal for the USA in its 3-2 win that sent Mexico into the intercontinental playoffs at Panama's expense, did not dress. Three starters -- Will Bruin, Giles Barnes and Warren Creavalle -- were inserted but could not score against Arabe Unido, which stalled long enough to waste the final half hour and qualify for the quarterfinals ahead of the Dynamo as it did in 2009.

The Dynamo's exit leaves the LA Galaxy, Sporting Kansas City and San Jose Earthquakes as the three MLS representatives in quarterfinals.
