Green set to attend November camp

[USA MEN] U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann is hoping to convince another German-American to pick the USA over Germany, and the first step is for Bayern Munich II teenager Julian Green to attend the U.S. national team camp in Europe before November friendlies against Scotland and Austria.

Green, 18, played all three games for Germany in UEFA U-19 qualifying last month, meaning he will have to apply to FIFA for a one-time switch in allegiance to represent the USA at the senior level. Such a switch in allegiance would be the equivalent of cap-tying him to the USA.

"Julian Green is a tremendous talent," said Klinsmann in a statement. "We have been scouting him for more than two years, and we are thrilled to bring him into our camp and introduce him to the senior team program. We believe we could help him grow into a special player."

Green, who had played for the U.S. U-18s in a friendly last year, was born in Tampa but has lived in Germany most of his life. He scored back-to-back hat tricks for Bayern Munich in its first two preseason games. He is currently playing for its reserve team in the fourth-level Regionalliga, where he has scored 13 goals.

John Brooks, the 20-year-old Hertha Berlin defender, also played for the USA and Germany at the youth level, but he has never played for either country in a competitive match so he is still eligible for both countries at the senior level. He played for the USA in a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina in August and suited up for one World Cup qualifier.

German-Americans currently in line to play for USA at the World Cup are starters Fabian Johnson and Jermaine Jones. Timmy Chandler and Danny Williams have not played for the USA since the 2-1 loss to Honduras in February.
