Mustangs and Gauchos draw before sellout crowd of 11,075

[CAL POLY-UC SANTA BARBARA: Men] Cal Poly and No. 17 UC Santa Barbara played to a 1-1 tie Friday in their Big West game played in front of a sellout crowd of 11,075 at Cal Poly's Spanos Stadium. The result halted the Gauchos' seven-game winning streak.

Cal Poly needed only eight minutes to get on the board when a corner kick from midfielder George Malki found Justin Dhillon at the back post, and the LA Galaxy academy product's shot got past Josh McNeely for the 1-0 lead.

But McNeely had a big game with four saves -- twice denying Mackenzie Pridham, the leading goalscorer in the Big West, from close range with diving stops, and Ari Lassiter, son of former MLS star Roy Lassiter, on a breakaway -- and a late first-half strike from French forward Achille Campion resulted in a 1-1 draw for the Gauchos.

Now at 6-0-1 in conference play, Tim Vom Steeg's team needs just one point from its remaining three games to clinch the North Division title, which comes with a bye in the first round of the conference tournament and home-field advantage for at least the semifinal match.
