West Virginia clinches fourth conference title in a row

[BIG 12: Women] Kate Schwindel scored her second golden goal in two weeks as No. 6 West Virginia clinched its second consecutive Big 12 regular-season title -- and fourth conference title in a row -- with a 2-1 comeback victory over Oklahoma in double overtime Friday night.

The win pushed the Mountaineers’ win streak to nine matches and their all-time Big 12 record to 14-0-1. They become the third program in Big 12 history to win back-to-back regular season championships after Texas A&M (2005-07) and Nebraska (1999-2000). They had also won regular-season division titles in the Big East in 2010 and 2011.

“For us to come in here and win after falling behind just speaks volumes of the hard work and focus that this team has put forth,” says Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “This team surprises me, given all the adversity we’ve battled this season and tonight. To come from behind and win tonight was just awesome. To win four straight conference championships says a lot, not only about the alumni but also the character of this program and this team. It’s a great feeling to witness this team play again and see how much they battled for another championship. I’m so excited we get to bring this home because this is a great one.”

By clinching the regular-season championship, West Virginia has assured itself of the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 Tournament Nov. 6-10 at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.
