[NOTRE DAME-VIRGINIA: Men] Darius Madison scored a pair of goals to lift No. 19 Virginia to a 2-0 victory at No. 2 NotreDame, handing the Fighting Irish their first loss in 14 games. The Cavs extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches with the win.
“We did a good job of knowing how they play andmove and not letting them get into a rhythm,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “On the other side, we knew what we needed to do to getinto a rhythm and were able to do that. We had a game plan and stuck to it. We worked extremely hard. We came into the game after tying the last three with some extra assertiveness, focus and tacticaldiscipline. We felt like these past three ties, although we played well, we deserved a better result.”
Madison recorded his first career multi-goal game as the Cavaliers became thefirst team to score at least two goals against Notre Dame this season. UVa has scored at least two goals in nine of its last 11 matches. Its 27 goals surpassed its goal total from the 2012 season withthree games to play in the regular season — all at home.
Virginia goalkeeper Jeff Gal made three saves to hand Notre Dame its first ACC loss.
“Virginia certainly dulled our offense today,” Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark said. “I think we only had seven shots, but theyonly had eight. It wasn’t a game with a lot of shots. Virginia was the first team this year to come into our house and dictate the game. They scored two goals at vital times, just beforehalftime and one immediately afterwards. Those were two blows to us and we never quite recovered. We had some flurries where we looked good, but I never felt we controlled the game today. I felt thatwe never had a grip on the game. We weren’t far away, but we never had a grip. I think we’ve controlled every other game this year, but not today and that was our downfall.
