Camilo hat trick earns Golden Boot award

[MLS: Leading Scorers] Camilo and Mike Magee took their Budweiser Golden Boot race down to the final day, yet in the end, neither player could lift his team into the MLS playoffs. But Camilo did claim a prestigious individual honor, that of top goalscorer.

Hours after Magee had netted his 21st goal in a 5-2 loss at Red Bull Arena that eliminated the Fire, Camilo nailed a hat trick to lead the already-ousted Whitecaps to a 3-0 defeat of Colorado and take the Golden Boot with 22 goals.

The total is five less than the single-season record of 27 set by Roy Lassiter in 1996 and tied last year by San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski. Prior to Wondo, the last 20-goal MLS scorer was Landon Donovan in 2008; he matched the 20 notched in 2007 by Luciano Emilio of D.C. United.

Magee pounced on a rebound to score in the sixth minute and give Chicago a 1-0 lead, and generated two more shots without scoring as the Red Bulls stormed back to score the next five goals. Camilo converted a penalty kick late in the first half and struck twice 10 minutes apart late in the second half to pass Magee with six minutes left in regulation.

Camilo Hat Trick:


Placing third was Marco Di Vaio of Montreal. He finished with 20 goals after the Impact fell in its finale, 1-0, in Toronto, yet qualified for the playoffs anyway thanks to Chicago’s defeat.

This marked the first season since MLS's inaugural season that as many as three players scored 20 or more goals.

Robbie Keane scored his 16th goal of the season in the Galaxy’s 1-1 tie at Seattle to wind up fourth in the charts.
