Huskers end Nittany Lions' Big Ten reign

[NEBRASKA-PENN STATE: Women] Freshman forward Jaycie Johnson raced from one end of the field to another and scored from 20 yards to give No. 18 Nebraska a 3-2 victory over No. 17 Penn State on Sunday at Nebraska Soccer Field. The win improved the Huskers' record to 9-1-0 and they can clinch the Big Ten regular-season championship with a victory Friday when Indiana visits Lincoln on Senior Day. The loss ended the Nittany Lions' streak of 15 consecutive Big Ten titles.

"I am so proud of our team," said Johnson, who had also scored to give Nebraska a 2-1 lead in the 83rd minute with her ninth goal of the season. "Our defense was unbelievable and our offense finished chances. We never quit, even when we're down and we picked each other up. Now we are one step closer to our goal of becoming Big Ten champs and I couldn't be any happier."

PSU led on Whitney Church's penalty kick until the 75th minute when Jordan Jackson headed home the equalizer off a long pass from Mexican international Ari Romero. It was Jackson's eighth goal of the year and five in her last six matches.

After Johnson's first goal put Nebraska ahead 2-1, Maya Hayes headed home her 17th goal of the year with just 112 seconds remaining to force overtime.

The Huskers are currently on a five-game win streak and have won 12 of their last 13 matches. They have won nine conference matches for the first time since 2000 and have racked up 14 regular-season wins for the first time since 2001.

The only team with a chance to overtake Nebraska is Michigan, which is 8-1-1.
