Mexico and Honduras advance, Japan upset

[UNDER-17 WORLD CUP] Honduras, which had never won a point in its first two appearances at the Under-17 World Cup, moved into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Uzbekistan. Defending champion Mexico also moved into the Under-17 World Cup quarterfinals in the United Arab Emirates with a 2-0 win over Italy to give Concacaf two teams in the final eight. Next up for Mexico: Brazil.

(Club America) scored in the first half and Ivan Ochoa (Pachuca) added an insurance goal as Mexico moved into the final eight.

Substitute Jorge Bodden scored with 15 minutes left for Honduras, which had knocked the USA out in the group stage.

The only teams with perfect records in the group stage had mixed results in the round of 16 on Monday. Japan fell to Sweden, 2-1, while Brazil beat Russia, 3-1.

Sweden got goals from Valmir Berisha and Gustav Engvall in the first half and hung on after an own goal got Japan back in the game.

All the goals in the Brazil-Russia game came in the last 20 minutes, including two for Boschilia (which give him a tournament-high six goals) and one for Mosquito (tied for second with four goals).
