Garcia Dismisses 'Lucky' Roma Label

Rudi Garcia hit back at suggestions that his AS Roma has been ‘lucky’ in winning its opening nine games of the Serie A season. The Giallorossi are hot favorites to set an all-time record 10th straight win to open the season when Garcia & co. host bottom club Chievo Verona on Thursday.

“This will be the most difficult game since the start of the season, as it is tough to play against Chievo,” Garcia said in his press conference. “We will only win if we remain humble. The players have always responded positively to my suggestions and I above all trust the veterans. They know a Serie A game is never won in advance. They also don’t need me to tell them this story is too wonderful for us to lose concentration now. We can’t wait to play the next game and are still hungry for these experiences.”

When asked if Roma had been ‘lucky’ in beating Udinese on the road with 10 men (thanks to a brilliant strike from American Michael Bradley), Garcia replied adamantly: “When we lose Francesco TottiGervinho and Douglas Maicon, we are not lucky.” He added: “Besides, fortune favors the brave. Look at the goal-line clearance by Leandro Castan – that was not luck. It was hunger, determination and grit. The same goes for Daniele De Rossi’s clearance against Napoli. If you want to call that luck, then I guess we’re lucky.”
