Ronaldo Responds Angrily as Blatter Mocks Him

  • Guardian, Wednesday, October 30, 2013 1:55 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday reacted angrily to FIFA President Sepp Blatter’s comment that he prefers four-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi to the Real Madrid forward, and that the Portugal captain also has “more expenses for the hairdresser” than his Barcelona counterpart, by posting the following message on his Facebook page, along with a video of Blatter making the remark:

"This video shows clearly the respect and consideration that FIFA has for me, for my club and my country. Much is explained now. I wish Mr. Blatter health and a long life, with the certainty that he will continue to witness, as he deserves, the successes of his favorite teams and players."

Blatter’s quick response came via Twitter: "I apologize if you were upset by my lighthearted answer at private event on Friday. I never meant to offend you." He also sent a more formal response to Real President Florentino Perez, who had asked the FIFA President for a formal retraction of the statement he made at the Oxford University event on Monday.

Blatter also drew criticism from Portugal soccer federation (FPF) President Fernando Gomes, who described his comments as “unfit and inappropriate.”

I personally much prefer Lionel Messi to Ronaldo. However, that said, Blatter was totally out of line. FIFA executives seem to think that they can pretty much do and saywhatever they want --- oh !! that's right, they can!! It appears that no individual or even country can hold them accountable for anything. I would love to have an outside firm accounting of Blatter's personal finances.
