Before Ibra, there was the Cosmos' Cabanas

[VIDEO PICK: Golazo] Last week, when we presented Zlatan Ibrahimovic's overhead backheel volley golazo, we asked "Ever seen a goal like this?" Soccer America columnist Paul Gardner reminded us that, yes, we have. It was three decades ago in Giants Stadium in a game between the New York Cosmos and the Tulsa Roughnecks.

Roberto Cabanas, then just 21 years old, raced into the penalty area to head a cross but mistimed his leap, jumping way too early. With his body virtually horizontal off the ground, as the ball passed behind him, he threw up his heels behind him, connected perfectly and rocketed the ball into the net. The Paraguayan went on to star for Paraguay at the 1986 World Cup ...

    I was 8 or 9 years old when I saw this live at Giant stadium. Was unbelievable seeing this at that time. We were calling it a backwards bicycle kick.

    Saw it as well; not in the stadium but watching on TV - have never forgotten it!
