Pilots pull even in WCC race

[PORTLAND-SANTA CLARA] The Timbers-Sounders match wasn't the only big soccer match in Portland on Thursday night. Ellen Parker had the game-winner, Micaela Capelle had a pair of assists and No. 16 Portland earned a convincing 3-1 win over No. 12 Santa Clara before 2,318 fans at Merlo Field to pull with the Broncos and BYU at the top of the WCC standings.

Ech team sits at 7-1-0 with one regular-season game remaining. WCC doesn't have a post-season tournament.

Center back Amanda Frisbie gave the Pilots their first lead of the game with a header in the 20th minute off a corner from freshman Allison Wetherington. About nine minutes later, the Broncos pulled even when Morgan Marlborough converted a penalty kick.

Portland finally broke in the 71st minute when Capelle took a touch on a ball from Danica Evans before sending a cross towards the center of the box, where Parker cracked a shot that grazed the left post before settling into the back of the net.

Noelle La Prevotte then added the insurance goal in the 88th minute off another nice ball from Capelle.
