Gauchos cap unbeaten Big West season before 12,805 fans

[UC SANTA BARBARA-CAL POLY] Goffin Boyoko and Charlie Miller scored second-half goals to give No. 14 UC Santa Barbara a 2-0 win over Cal Poly at Harder Stadium on Saturday night in front of 12,805 fans, the largest crowd of the 2013 college season and the fifth largest on-campus crowd for a regular-season game in NCAA history. Over the last two seasons, UCSB-Cal Poly matchups occupy the top four single game attendance spots in Division I men's soccer.

With the win, the Gauchos completed the regular season with a 7-0-3 record in conference play. It is just the second time in Big West history that a team has gone unbeaten. UCSB's 2002 squad is the only other team to accomplish the feat. The Gauchos' 11-game unbeaten streak is their fourth longest in program history.

"I'm extremely proud of the effort that our guys showed in this game," said UCSB coach Tim Vom Steeg. "As the game went on, we took over and our team played at a very high level. It's Senior Night and you're playing your rival so I don't know if it gets any better than this with the win tonight."

Freshman Drew Murphy set up Boyoko's goal for his team-leading eighth assist, giving him the most assists by a UCSB freshman since Eric Price put up a record 14 in 1978.
