First three African berths claimed

[WORLD CUP QUALIFYING] As expected, African powerhouses Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroon clinched berths to the World Cup finals in Brazil. They bring to 24 the number of teams that have qualified for the World Cup. The eight remaining spots will be claimed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

IVORY COAST. Ivory Coast settled for a 1-1 tie with Senegal in Senegal's home leg played in Casablanca, Morocco, to go through 4-2 on aggregate.

The Elephants, who will be playing in their third straight finals, looked to be in danger when Moussa Sow's penalty kick gave Senegal the lead.

Needing only one more goal to go ahead on its away goal scored in stoppage time in the first leg, the Lions of Teranga had all the chances and almost scored a second goal in stoppage time when Salif Sane missed off a goalmouth scramble.

Salomon Kalou's goal four minutes into stoppage time for Ivory Coast ended the suspense.

NIGERIA. Nigeria beat Ethiopia, 2-0, at home to go through 4-1 on aggregate.

Nigeria, which won the African Cup of Nations earlier in the year, qualified for the World Cup for the fifth time in the last six tournaments.

Goals by Victor Moses from the penalty spot in the 20th minute and sub Victor Obinna in the 82nd minute sealed the series at Calabar's UJ Esuene Stadium.

CAMEROON. Cameroon clinched its African record seventh trip to the World Cup with a 4-1 win over Tunisia in the second leg on Sunday after the first leg ended 0-0.

Cameroon was ahead 2-0 on goals by Pierre Webo and Benjamin Moundandjo after the first half hour. Ahmed Akaichi pulled a goal back for Tunisians just after halftime, but the Indomitable Lions clinched the series with when Jean Makoun scored twice in the second half.

The two other African series -- Egypt-Ghana (1-6 after the first leg) and Algeria-Burkina Faso (2-3) -- will be decided on Tuesday.

In your list of 24 World Cup qualifiers you have Switzerland listed twice (12 and 15) and did not list Bosnia-Herzegovina.
