Maryland will be leaving for the Big Ten next season, and its ACC opponents will say good riddance. The Terrapins won their third title in
four years with a 1-0 win over Virginia in their ACC finale on Sunday to cap what Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski
called "one of the great moments in my coaching
career." Patrick Mullins
, the 2010 Soccer America Player of the Year, had the play that decided the game, albeit an own goal.
With just under three minutes remaining, he beat his defender on the left side, worked his way into the box and drove a hard ball that ricocheted off the knee of Virginia’s Kevin McBride
and into the goal.
“I have seen it happen so many times,” said Mullins, the ACC’s leading scorer. “If you put
the ball in good spots and play it in there with some pace, good things happen.”
UVa rallied with two late goals before beating No. 1 Notre Dame in the semifinals in a
shootout, but it had no answer with just 162 seconds to get a reply.
