Goalie Kevin Hartman
, MLS's all-time leader in regular-season appearances with 416 and the only player to play in more than 400 games, announced his retirement on Thursday.
for highlights of Hartman's career.)
Hartman was a
member of the New York Red Bulls in 2013 but didn't play in a game. The Red Bulls were his fourth club after the LA Galaxy, with which he won two MLS titles (2002 and 2005), Kansas City Wizards and FC
His career spanned 17 years during which he also won two MLS Supporters Shields (1998 and 2002), two U.S. Open Cups (2001 and 2005) and one Concacaf Champions Cup (2000) with the
Galaxy. The Red Bulls won the Supporters' Shield in 2013.
He was MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and a Best XI selection in 1999, only his third year in the league.
After 10 seasons with the Galaxy, Hartman spent three seasons with Kansas City
and three with FC Dallas before signing as a free agent with New York, which needed backup help for its unsettled goalkeeping position.
His bitter contract dispute with Kansas City after
the 2009 season -- the club retained his rights even though he wasn’t under contract -- was cited as a need to reform the structure of MLS contracts.
“Kevin deserves to be
remembered as one of the all-time greats in Major League Soccer,” said Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke
. “Having the opportunity to both compete
against him as a player and coach him this season, it is clear to me that Kevin is the ultimate competitor and professional and it was an honor to work with him. I wish him the best of luck in the
next stage of his career.” All-Time MLS Appearances: GP PLAYER
