A day after Kevin Hartman
retired, fellow keeper Matt Reis
backed him up, first at UCLA and then the LA Galaxy, was let go by the New England, where played the last 11 years.
Reis played 12 games in 2013, giving him 293 appearances. He started
both games in the playoffs for the Revs, who lost to Sporting Kansas City, 4-3, on aggregate in the Easter Conference semifinals. He was a finalist for MLS Goalie of the Year in 2005 and 2006.
The 12 players who were either waived or had their options declined also included former U.S. international Charlie Davies,
who played just 23 minutes
after returning from Europe.
The Revs picked up options on 11 players, including Jose Goncalves
, a finalist for Defender of the Year and Newcomer
of the Year, and Honduran national team star Jerry Bengtson
, who rarely started.
“After every season, we have to take a hard look at our
roster and make some very difficult decisions, both for personnel and salary budget considerations,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns
said in a
statement. “In our case, we’ll continue discussions with some of the out-of-contract and declined-option players in the hope they will return to the club next year.”
