Seattle derby lives up to its billing

[WASHINGTON-SEATTLE: Men] A standing-room only crowd of 3,100 watched top-ranked Washington beat neighbor Seattle, 4-2, to advance to only its second round-of-16 appearance in the NCAA Men's Tournament. The Huskies (15-1-4) opened up a 4-0 lead before Seattle make it interesting with two goals seconds apart in the 72nd minute.

Josh Heard had a goal and two assists, while freshman star Cristian Roldan had a goal and an assist on Darwin Jones' opening goal.

James Moberg assisted on goals by Heard and Roldan for goals before Mason Robertson made it 4-0 in the 66th minute, scoring in his fourth straight game.

But the Redhawks got goals 27 seconds apart from Chase Hanson and Brady Ballew to reduce UW's lead in half, but key saves by Ryan Herman on shots by Hanson and Miguel Gonzalez two minutes later calmed the storm.

The loss ended Seattle's unbeaten streak at 10 games ended its first appearance in any Division I sport since 1964. (It spent many years as an NAIA and Division II school.)

“This was terrific and it’s what you want out of a collegiate soccer game between cross-town rivals,” said Seattle coach Pete Fewing. “We had packed stands and six goals, which is a lot. I’m proud of our guys for never giving up. They have a terrific team, the Huskies are a very good team and it’s fun to play in a game like this. I’m proud of the fact that we didn’t give up. I give credit to the Huskies with four goals and I expect they’ll do great things in this tournament.”
