UCLA, which had been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Stanford three of the last four seasons, turned the tables on the Cardinal with
a 2-0 win to advance to the quarterfinals. The loss ended Stanford’s bid for a sixth consecutive appearance in the Women's College Cup.
UCLA won on goals from Kodi Lavrusky
and Taylor Smith
, both on passes from Sam Mewis
gave UCLA a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute after a give-and-go with Mewis, burying her shot to the far post for her sixth goal of the season.
Smith put the game away with five minutes to
play when she buried her shot to the far post for her seventh goal of the year.

came up with big saves on Taylor Uhl

and Courtney Verloo
to earn her 13th shutout of the
"Hats off to both teams," said first-year UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell
. "It was such a high-level, good quality game to watch. I was
definitely a little anxious at the end until we got the equalizer. I could breathe a little bit and take a deep breath with less than five minutes to go."
Stanford finished with a 15-6-1
record. The six losses were two more than it had for the previous four seasons.
