Seminoles use lucky bounce to reach final

[WOMEN'S COLLEGE CUP: Florida State-Virginia Tech] Florida State made it three in a row this season over ACC rival Virginia Tech, but the Seminoles needed some late heroics from Jamia Fields and a lucky bounce to move to Sunday's final at the Women's College Cup with a 3-2 win.

In a back-and-forth game saw FSU fall behind, take the lead and then lose it, Fields broke a 2-2 tie in the 83rd minute with a blast from 22 yards that caromed off the far post, then off the back of Virginia Tech goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts and into the net.

The goal marked 14th time that a goal scored in the 80th minute or later has either tied a 'Noles' match or resulted in a game-winner. But there was suspense until the end as a header by Virginia Tech star Jazmine Reeves clanked off the crossbar with just 65 seconds left in the game.

"It was one heck of a battle," said Florida State coach Mark Krikorian. "Sometimes in this game you have to have a little bit of luck. One of the words that we have used to describe our team this season has been perseverance. We showed that again today and we were able to find a way to win a game. It’s not always pretty. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t pretty very much at all, but we did enough on the defending side and enough attacking to find the result.”

Ashley Manning put the Hokies ahead in the 32nd minute, but Florida State came back to get the equalizer on a goal by Kristin Grubka right before the half. Fields gave the 'Noles their first lead in the 57th minute, but the Hokies countered to tie the score at 2-2 on a goal by Ashley Meier in he 79th minute.

The win sent Florida State to the championship game for the second time in seven appearances at the College Cup. It lost to USC in the 2007 final.

The ball from Fields was no blast, but rather a crossing effort gone awry that met some good fortune. Truth be told, the match deserved to be decided by a quality goal rather than poorly executed skill rewarded. That is why we love soccer ... and often find it maddening.
