Roma's Garcia: Scudetto Race is on

Following his team’s 2-1 win against Fiorentina on Sunday, Rudi Garcia warned Serie A leader Juventus that, “Roma are in the Scudetto race.” The Giallorossi famously began the season with 10 consecutive wins, setting a Serie A record, but after losing key players like Francesco Totti and Gervinho to injury, the capital club drew its next four matches, ceding its place at the top to Antonio Conte’s Juve.

Against Fiorentina, Roma returned to full strength, with Gervinho back in the starting 11 and Totti on the bench, but it was Mattia Destro, also back from a six-month injury layoff, who stole the headlines by slamming home the winner from a Gervinho cross in the 67th-minute. The win closed the gap at the top to three points.

“Today what really mattered was to win and I am very happy for both the players and fans,” Garcia told Sky Sport Italia. “It was also great for Destro, who had been out of action for a very long time. He did well, changed the game and made his mark on the afternoon.”

Game-winner Destro said: “The only thing that mattered to me was getting back on to the field, as I really couldn’t take it anymore. To score a goal as well was just wonderful. I was out for such a long time, but it’s all behind me now and I am back.
